The First Week of Twenty-Twenty (2020)
The idea for The First Week of Twenty-Twenty began with the desire to highlight how the new year was packed with troubling narratives. The play showcases how narratives on a personal, national, and international scale intertwine in daily conversations, and how some people more than others are interested in global happenings. As British playwright and a key figure of the Royal Court, Stephen Jefreys states: “Plays are expressions of ideas that you are passionate about, and ideas are things that we want to put over, to express our views of the world” (Jefreys, 2019, 260). In trying to comprehend all that happened between first and seventh of January, two-thousand and twenty, I felt passionate about telling a story of a young British woman with a unique drive to understand what was going on in the world. Located in England, Eleanor struggles to balance a commitment to the life in front of her and her curiosity about global happenings. Her intellect becomes emotionally invested in the Australian bushfires and the rising tension between the US and the Middle East. Consequently, conflicts arise between herself and her boyfriend, Ben, and her family.
